LOS ANGELES -- American Honda saw its sales tread water last month as higher Acura crossover sales failed to offset a decline in Honda Civic deliveries.
Combined sales from the Honda and Acura divisions totaled 116,507 vehicles last month, a 0.1 percent decrease from November 2012, but still the automaker’s second-best November sales on record, the company said in a statement. The automaker’s 2013 sales through November were up 8 percent to 1,390,057 vehicles.
Honda Civic sales fell 13 percent to 26,291 units in November, contributing to the Honda Division’s 2 percent sales decline to 101,948 vehicles. Despite pressure from heavy holiday discounting throughout the industry, the company’s retail sales remained strong, American Honda sales boss John Mendel said in a statement.
“We likely extended our retail sales lead despite very aggressive market actions by competitors in key high-volume segments,” Mendel said. “And we’re upping the ante as we approach the close of the year with a significantly updated 2014 Civic going on sale in just a few days.”
The company’s Acura brand proved to be a bright spot in November with sales up 19 percent to 14,559 units last month.
Leading the gain was the MDX mid-sized crossover, up 81 percent to 6,091 units.
“It's gratifying that the new MDX has sparked such a strong customer response so shortly after we hit a home run with RDX,” Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales, said in a statement. “It's clear we've found the sweet spot of the luxury SUV market.”
