Acura put the redesigned MDX on a diet. A blend of high-strength steel and other materials helped the 2014 crossover shed 275 pounds compared with its predecessor. But engineer Jim Keller says Honda's work on the MDX reflects an industry in its lightweighting infancy. A host of materials and technologies -- some proven, some not -- will compete for automakers' attention as they perform a high-stakes balancing act: keeping vehicles rigid and safe while reducing weight to meet stricter U.S. fuel-economy rules.
