Barb Samardzich, Ford of Europe vice president for product development, says Ford's diesel engines probably won't appear in U.S. cars.

The added cost of diesel emissions controls coupled with the higher cost of diesel fuel in the United States makes it a losing proposition: "When you do the business equation, it just doesn't pan out for customers," she said.

"To really push that and get a higher diesel take, as an OEM you'd have to subsidize that, so a lot of the [price] premium is minimized at the dealership, which is never a good idea."
