The LaFerrari is a Ferrari first

The new LaFerrari supercar is the first model entirely designed by the company's internal styling center and it looks like more in-house products will follow, but Ferrari's boss says that is not a bad sign for longtime partner Pininfarina.

Ferrari has relied on Italy's Pininfarina to design nearly all its production cars since 1951. The only exception was the Dino 308 GT4 designed and built by Bertone in 1973.

Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo gave no indication that the company will cut its ties with Pininfarina.

"There is nothing from Pininfarina in this car, but we are working with them on two other models, which I hope will come to market soon," Montezemolo said on the sidelines of the LaFerrari's unveiling in Geneva yesterday.

One of the cars that sources say Pininfarina is working on is the replacement for the California 2+2 convertible that, at 5 years old, is the senior member of the company's lineup.

Ferrari's move to increase its design independence comes three years after it hired Flavio Manzoni away from his post as head of advanced design at the Volkswagen Group. Manzoni, an Italian, also has worked at Lancia, Seat and Fiat.

High demand

Separately, Montezemolo said Ferrari received more than 700 requests for LaFerrari, but production will remain limited to 499 units.

LaFerrari will start at 1 million euros plus taxes, a price that will remain fixed until the car's production run is completed by the end of next year.

The only option Ferrari is offering is a different paint job. Those who don't want one of the three standard paints -- red, yellow and black – can get any other color as well as a two-tone look.
