Volkswagen AG plans to unveil the production version of the next-generation GTI hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show next week, giving the first glimpse of the high-performance Golf variant that will debut in Europe this May.
Europeans can already buy the seventh-generation Golf, the first vehicle to be built on the automaker's MQB architecture.
Volkswagen already has announced it will show the diesel-powered GTD variant in Geneva.
It will expand the line further with the GTI, which will include a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 220 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque.
Volkswagen says the car's fuel economy will improve 18 percent.
With a 27 combined mpg for the 2012 GTI sold in the United States, those gains translate to 32 mpg combined for the next-generation model.
For the U.S. market, the car will be built at Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico, where the Golf and its variants will introduce VW's next-generation MQB architecture.
