Phil Smart Sr., longtime Mercedes-Benz dealer, dies at 93

SEATTLE -- Phil Smart Sr., a longtime car dealer and civic leader, died Feb. 8. He was 93.

He started selling cars in the early 1950s in Seattle and eventually built Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz, which he operated for several decades.

Smart was active in the Boy Scouts of America and the Seattle Rotary Club. He also was a volunteer at Seattle Children’s Hospital for 46 years, according to a tribute on the hospital’s Web site.

In 2007, Smart received a distinguished service citation from the Automotive Hall of Fame.
