Heavy snow won’t stop auction action, NAAA president says

ORLANDO -- The roads are blocked, businesses are closed and people have hunkered down in their homes as the Northeast rides out the great blizzard of 2013.

But come Monday morning auto auctions located in the snow-covered Northeast will be ready for business, predicts Paul Lips, president of the National Auto Auction Association.

“The good thing is we had forewarning of the storm; kinda like with Sandy, so we were able to prepare ahead of time,” says Lips of the NAAA member auctions located in the path of the storm. “If there was a need to move cars or have people on call for the weekend to move the snow, everyone was ready.”

Lips, who is also executive vice president of operations and finance at ADESA, says ADESA has two auctions in the path of the super snow storm: ADESA Long Island in Yaphank, N.Y., and ADESA in Framingham, Mass. Both had successful sales on Friday and they are spending the weekend clearing and cleaning snow, he says.

Personnel at auctions in the Snow Belt, especially in areas such as Boston, are used to moving snow, Lips said.

“We’ve got all the equipment, the same with the independent auctions and Manheim auctions in the Northeast, he says. “It’s a little bit of extra snow to move around this week-end, but I’m sure they’re all getting through it and will be ready to roll next week.”

And for dealers who don’t want to brave the elements, Lips suggests that you buy your cars online.

He adds: “We can sell cars regardless of the weather conditions.”
