Hakan Samuelsson, who became Volvo's CEO in October, says he is interested in bringing a station wagon, once a Volvo staple, back into the lineup.

Speaking at the Detroit auto show last month, Samuelsson also said that a crossover smaller than the XC60 is a good idea for Volvo but said he does not favor adding a large luxury sedan.

Samuelson said his vision for the brand is "safety, styling and functionality."

He said Volvo's German luxury-car rivals have had problems with ease-of-use on its center stacks, so he sees an opportunity for Volvo.

Samuelson said: "Volvo has always been known for functionality."
