Saab to restart 9-3 output

Under its new Chinese owner, Saab plans to start building diesel-powered 9-3 sedans and convertibles in August. Sales are intended to help fund Saab's conversion into an electric-car manufacturer.

The Swedish automaker filed for bankruptcy in December 2011 and has not produced vehicles for nearly two years.

The new owner, National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which bought Saab out of bankruptcy last August, aims to supply China with electric vehicles. After adding the 9-3X wagon this year and electrics based on the 9-3 in 2014, the goal is to produce 120,000 cars a year by 2016, according to a letter sent by NEVS to suppliers and obtained by Bloomberg. That target would come close to the brand's 2006 peak of 133,000 autos.

NEVS is owned by a Chinese investor.
