The convertible version of the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show in early March, according to Autoweek. Also, the Stingray convertible will go on sale as a 2014 model and could be in dealer showrooms by the end of this year.
Press preview days for the Geneva show are March 5-6.
The show opens to the public March 7-17. Geneva was also the site where the sixth-generation Corvette convertible made its world debut, in March 2004.
The new Corvette Stingray coupe was unveiled for the Detroit auto show. Chevrolet and Corvette officials have declined to answer questions about the arrival of a convertible version.
But camouflaged prototypes of Stingray convertibles have been photographed on public roads.
Chevrolet says the Corvette Stingray was engineered to compete with the best sports cars in the world, and it would like to boost export sales of the two-seater.
Geneva will give the Corvette Stingray convertible an international stage for an introduction. It also is an image leader for Chevrolet, one of two global brands for General Motors.
Sources say the Stingray convertible will trail the launch of the coupe by about three months.
Production of the Stingray coupe is expected to begin in August, which would lead to a November production launch for the convertible.
Few details of the Stingray convertible are confirmed, but the camouflaged prototypes were fitted with fabric roofs. The 450-hp 6.2-liter V-8 and choice of seven-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions are likely to carry over from the coupe.
Geneva is an auto show where automakers such as Ferrari and Porsche regularly introduce new cars on neutral turf in the European market.
It's possible that this year's Geneva show could be the stage for the introduction of a new high-performance Ferrari sports car, known as the F70.
The F70 would be a replacement for the Enzo supercar and draw on Formula One racing technologies developed on the FXX race car verison of the Enzo.
