To the Editor:

Regarding "NHTSA's backup-camera rules delayed" (autonews.com, Jan. 2): The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is half right on the issue of backup-camera rules. A backup camera requires the driver to look at a monitor inside the car.

It would be better to have a nonintrusive ultrasonic sensor as the early-warning system for the driver. Such a system is quiet until it detects an object; it then has a progressively more intense sound and a flashing light showing the driver where an object is.

Also, mounting sensors in front bumpers makes parallel parking much easier.
