Ask a world-famous designer at the Detroit show why his new vehicle has a sharp crease down its side, and chances are he'll talk about emotion.

"Cars have to be highly emotional," insists Won Kyu Kang, gazing at the BMW 4-series coupe concept that he styled, on display at the Detroit show. He gave his car deep body lines pronounced enough to make a metal-stamping manager weep.

Shiro Nakamura, creative director for Nissan and Infiniti, points out the sharp character lines and flowing body panels on his Nissan Resonance crossover concept. "It's a way to express emotion," Nakamura agrees. "The challenge is to make the line as sharp as possible. It's not so easy to manufacture it."

The crease down the side of Hyundai's HCD-14 Genesis concept looks sharp enough to slice a salmon. "It visually elongates the body," explains its design manager, Chris Zarlenga. "You capture the emotion of a long, luxurious body."
