General Motors has parted ways with former product boss Bob Lutz, 80, who had been a paid part-time consultant for GM since September 2011.

Lutz told Automotive News his GM contract expired Dec. 31, and the two sides decided not to renew it. He didn't elaborate. In a statement, GM said the company values Lutz's "unvarnished opinion, insight and perspective."

Lutz is credited with a revival in the design and quality of GM vehicles during his tenure as head of product development from 2001 to 2009. He also led GM's marketing in 2010 before retiring that year.
