Based on an almost-complete report, North American car and light-truck production in 2012 rose 18 percent, or 2.4 million units, to a preliminary 15,853,026. It was the third straight annual gain and the highest total since 15,972,020 in 2008.

Final figures for a few companies come next month.

Excluding Mitsubishi's 131-unit drop, every automaker recorded a rise in output. Honda led the gains, with a 53 percent output increase, followed by gains of 43 percent at Toyota and 42 percent at Volkswagen. Mexican plants' production rose 13 percent to a record 2,985,337, surpassing the previous record of 2,650,819 set in 2011. It is the third year in a row that Mexican production has set a record.
