Mazda Motor Corp. set the starting price of the redesigned 2014 Mazda6 mid-sized sedan at $21,675, including shipping, making it one of the least expensive family sedans in the U.S. market.
The base price represents an increase of $155 over the 2013 model.
The base 2014 Mazda6, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, is $795 less than the 2013 Honda Accord with a manual gearbox.
Customers who opt for the base Mazda6 with a six-speed automatic transmission, however, will see the price jump to $23,290. That is more expensive than the starting price of the Ford Fusion, Kia Optima, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata, and Chevrolet Malibu, all of which come standard with automatic or continuously-variable transmissions.
The extra $1,615 for the Mazda6's automatic gearbox brings additional features and an extra 1 mpg on the highway over the manual's ratings -- for a 38 mpg highway fuel economy rating. That equals the 2013 Nissan Altima for best highway fuel economy among non-hybrid mid-sized sedans.
Mazda redesigned the mid-sized sedan with new platform and powertrain technologies to reduce weight and boost fuel efficiency. Mazda has branded the new technology as SkyActiv.
The car is on sale now.
The Mazda6 initially will be offered with one engine, a 184-hp 2.5-liter direct injection gasoline engine generating 185 lbs.-ft. of torque mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
A 2.2-liter twin turbo diesel engine will be added to the Mazda6 lineup in the second half of 2012.
Standard features on base i Sport trim models include push-button start, air conditioning, 17-inch allow wheels, power windows, steering wheel audio and cruise controls and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.
Safety features including anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, tire pressure monitoring, electronic brakeforce distribution and others are also standard on all 2014 Mazda6 models.
With the automatic on i Sport models, buyers will receive Bluetooth connectivity, a 5.8-inch color display with rear backup camera, audio voice command, HD Radio, Pandora internet radio and other features.
The mid-level i Touring trim also features 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, power driver's seat and other options.
Pricing on the top-line i Grand Touring trim level starts at $30,290 and covers 19-inch platinum silver wheels, power moonroof, high-intensity headlamps, leather-trimmed sport seats with heaters for the front, paddle shifters, a rear lip spoiler and other features.
Mazda sold 33,756 Mazda6s in the U.S. market last year, down 6 percent from 2011, and well behind the segment's sales leaders.
Mazda officials have not released a U.S. sales target for the new Mazda6, but the U.S. market is expected to receive a majority of the 160,000 units Mazda plans to produce this year.
