DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. has sold 239 acres at a former assembly plant in suburban Detroit to Trident Barrow Management, a unit of Barrow Development of New York.

The sprawling plant located northwest of Detroit in Wixom, Mich., opened in 1957 and closed in 2007. It produced some of Ford's classic car lines, such as Lincoln Continentals of the late 1950s and the Ford Thunderbird.

Terms were not released.

The property may be used for future manufacturing, research and development, office and retail space, Ford said Friday.

It is too early to determine plans for the site, said Brian Wilson, co-founder of Barrow Development Group. Demolition of buildings on the site will begin by the end of March, Ford said.
