DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. and its community relations arm today committed $10 million to a program aimed at strengthening a Detroit neighborhood.

Dubbed "Operation Brighter Future – Detroit," the initiative will establish the Ford Resource and Engagement Center in a once-vacant building in southwest Detroit.

A local development corporation will work with Ford to offer a number of community resources and programs through the new community center.

The investment aims to "…empower families and strengthen the community," Ford COO Mark Fields said in a statement today.

Ford plans to provide operating support for the facility for at least four years and funding to local nonprofits to launch the programs at the center, it said in the release.

Additionally, Ford plans to "adopt" a recreation center in the neighborhood, funding various programs there.

Ford also announced other support to the city of Detroit, including two F-series chassis to the Detroit Public Safety Foundation to be turned into new ambulances.

The initiative caps investments in other local community development and cultural programs totaling about $60 million over the past five years, Ford said.
