It's hard to believe a company run by Sergio Marchionne would add an incentive to steal customers from one run by Ferdinand Piech.

We jest, of course.

Chrysler/Fiat boss Marchionne and Volkswagen's Piech have traded verbal punches for years. This year VW demanded Marchionne resign as the rotating head of the European auto lobbying group ACEA. At the Paris auto show in September, Marchionne did everything but call VW execs outside for a fistfight.

Now Chrysler has offered $1,000 in conquest cash on the hood of all but three of its products for current U.S. owners of ... wait for it ... Volkswagens.

Chrysler only exempted three of its vehicles from the VW spiff: the new Viper, the Grand Cherokee SRT and some trim versions of the Dodge Dart SE.

The offer doesn't apply to owners of Fords, Chevys, Toyotas, Hondas -- and every other brand that doesn't keep trying to buy Alfa Romeo just to get under Marchionne's skin.
