Ram's mpg boast gets a snappy comeback from Ford

As the Big Kahuna in the large-pickup class, Ford has taken a swipe at the rival Ram 1500 and its boast of best-in-class 25 mpg highway fuel economy.
A new Blue Oval marketing campaign doesn't mention the third-place Chrysler Group product by name, but it hits back in an area where the Ram 1500 lags the Ford F-150.
"Fuel economy without power is like fishin' without bait," Ford exclaims in a print ad illustrated by a whale-sized empty fishhook.
The ad says the F-150 has the "best combination of towing and fuel economy" at 11,300 pounds and 22 mpg highway. The 4x2 Ram 1500 outperforms the comparably equipped V-6 4x2 F-150 in highway fuel economy at 25 mpg but falters in the comparison with a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds.
General Motors -- No. 2 in the large-pickup wars -- will bring out a new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra next year. So expect more taunting and teasing among the truck titans in 2013.
