Japanese companies placed nine vehicles and U.S. automakers placed eight on the short list of entries in the running for the 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards.
Altogether, 11 cars and 10 trucks/utilities were chosen. Finalists will be announced in December and winners will be named Jan. 14 during a press conference before the Detroit auto show press days.
Japanese companies and their vehicles on the short list:
• American Honda: Honda Accord, car; Acura RDX, truck/utility
• Mazda North America: CX-5, truck/utility
• Nissan North America: Nissan Altima, car; Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti JX35, truck/utility
• Subaru of America: BRZ, car
• Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.: Toyota Avalon and Scion FR-S, car
U.S. automakers and their vehicles on the list:
• Chrysler Group: Dodge Dart, car; Ram 1500, truck
• Ford Motor Co.: Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, car; Ford C-Max and Escape, truck/utility
• General Motors: Cadillac ATS and Chevrolet Malibu, car
The other contender for car of the year is the BMW 3 series.
Other contenders for the truck/utility of the year are the Audi Allroad, BMW X1 and Hyundai Santa Fe.
For 2012, the Hyundai Elantra was selected North American Car of the Year and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque was named North American Truck of the Year.
Winners are selected by 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. The jurors include Edward Lapham, executive editor of Automotive News. Vehicles are chosen based on factors including innovation, comfort, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
