LONDON -- Pictures of Jaguar's new F-Type released before its Paris debut this week reveal a contemporary-looking two-seater that also calls to mind the brand's E-Type of the 1960s and '70s.
The aluminum-bodied convertible will go on sale next spring as Jaguar's fourth and smallest model. A coupe version is expected about a year later.
The E-Type, built from 1961-1974, is evoked in details such as the hood-length central bulge, the near-oval of the protruding grille and the falling body line toward the tail.
The car suggests the brand's return to its sporting tradition after decades spent focusing on luxury sedans.
The car retains much of the styling of the C-X16 coupe concept unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The front end, with its dual side intakes, L-shaped driving lights set within the headlights and chrome-ringed grille is lifted directly from that concept.
The F-Type will be priced at about $86,000 and will compete with the more expensive Porsche 911, a source told Automotive News Europe.
Three engines will be offered: two versions of Jaguar's new 3.0-liter V-6 supercharged gasoline engine and a version of its current 5.0-liter supercharged gasoline V-8.
