AutoNation's August sales gain tops U.S. average

AutoNation Inc. said new-vehicle sales to U.S. retail customers rose 28 percent in August -- well ahead of the overall industry sales gain of 20 percent.

Total new-vehicle sales rose to 23,213 units, the company said. Sales in its import segment jumped 42 percent to 12,530.

Domestic and luxury brands also did well in August, AutoNation reported. Domestic-brand sales rose 20 percent to 6,961. Luxury-brand sales rose 6 percent to 3,722.

AutoNation ranks No. 1 on the Automotive News list of the top 125 U.S. dealership groups with new-vehicle retail sales of 224,034 units in 2011.
