Volkswagen will introduce a redesigned Golf next month in Berlin that is longer, wider and lower than the current model.

The first details of the seventh-generation Golf were released prior to the car’s official unveiling. The redesigned version goes on sale in Europe in November and in North America in the second half of next year. At 167.5 inches long, 70.8 inches wide and 57.2 inches tall, the new Golf is 2.2 inches longer and 0.5 inch wider than the current model, and 1.1 inches lower. It is the first VW model to use the MQB (modular transverse architecture) platform.

Even with the larger dimensions, the car is about 220 pounds lighter than the current Golf, VW says. Using ultra high-strength steel shaved about 50 of those pounds, VW says.
