Goodyear tests soybean oil as a tire material

AKRON, Ohio -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. says it is testing soybean oil for use in tires to extend tread life by 10 percent and reduce the use of petroleum-based oil. Goodyear’s tire plant in Lawton, Okla., has produced prototype tires. If tests are successful, the new tire could enter production as early as 2015.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber, of Akron, Ohio, ranks No. 48 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers with estimated worldwide parts sales to automakers of $4.2 billion in 2011.
