BMW is the official automotive sponsor of the Olympic Games, but Jaguar is stealing some of its thunder in a London exhibit of postwar British design at the Victoria and Albert Museum that is timed to coincide with the Games.
The automotive star of the show is Malcolm Sayer's Jaguar E-Type, presented alongside an eclectic mix of machines, fashion and architecture -- a scale model of the Concorde airliner, a 1976 Topper sailing dinghy, outfits worn by Marc Bolan and David Bowie, and photography by Terence Donovan and David Bailey.
To launch the show, Jaguar lined up cars on the Kensington sidewalk -- examples of the C-, D- and E-types, together worth several million dollars.
Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum trained at London's Royal College of Art, a stone's throw from the Victoria and Albert. Said Callum: "That's why I like this exhibition here, it's close to the center of British car design talent."
