BMW's redesigned 3-series coupe and convertible likely will be renamed the 4 series when they go on sale next year.

The redesigned 3-series sedan went on sale in the United States in February, and the station wagon will still be a 3-series model when it debuts next year. But the pricier two-door models will be part of a 4-series lineup that will include the X4 crossover and possibly a four-door model with coupe styling.

The 4-series family will mirror BMW's 6-series lineup. The 6-series has a convertible, coupe, coupelike Gran Coupe four-door and the X6. The vehicles are priced higher than the 5 series and have sportier styling.
