The first 2013 Cadillac ATS compact sedan rolled off the line today at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Michigan.

General Motors hopes the ATS -- which arrives in dealerships in August and is the brand's first compact sedan in three decades -- will compete favorably with the BMW 3-series.

The ATS will have a new rear wheel drive-based design that shoots for a more "nimble, quick and fun driving performance," GM says.

Plant Manager Tony Francavilla talked about the first 2013 Cadillac ATS compact luxury sport sedan intended for public sale, after it rolled off the Lansing Grand River assembly line today.

The plant also produces the CTS sedan, wagon and coupe as well as V-series performance models for each vehicle.

"The new Cadillac ATS represents an investment in Lansing and our workforce," said Tony Francavilla, Lansing regional plant manager, in a statement. "A successful launch needs a great process and a great product, but at the heart of it all are the people, and the care they put into each and every vehicle."
