VW prices 2013 diesel Beetle starting at $24,065

A version of Volkswagen’s 2013 Beetle with a turbocharged diesel engine and direct injection will start at $24,065, including shipping -- about $3,500 more than the base model -- when it goes on sale in August, the company said today.

The diesel variant will add a third engine option for the Beetle and a sixth TDI model to the brand’s U.S. lineup. The Beetle also is offered with a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder gasoline engine and 2.0-liter, turbocharged gasoline engine. VW last offered a diesel engine on the Beetle in 2006.

The redesigned 2012 Beetle went on sale in September. Through May, VW has sold 9,740 Beetles this year in the United States. The brand skipped the 2011 model year for the Beetle.

So far, the German brand has done well with the Passat TDI, which its executives say is in short supply. Like the Beetle, the Passat was redesigned for the 2012 model year and launched in September. In May, TDI models accounted for 20.3 percent of VW’s U.S. sales, up 21 percent from a year earlier.
