Ford, Dow form partnership for carbon fiber composites

DEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Motor Co. has formed a partnership with Dow Chemical Co. to produce parts of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic for high-volume vehicles. The companies signed an agreement to establish a less costly source of automotive-grade carbon fiber and develop a high-volume manufacturing process. Ford plans to reduce the weight of its cars and light trucks by as much as 750 pounds, and carbon fiber will play a role.
