NEW YORK -- Acura Division will bring a new version of its RL flagship to market in early 2013.
The RLX Concept, unveiled here today, features a base 310-hp V-6 engine, mated to a front-wheel-drive transmission and a four-wheel-steering system. The base model is expected to weigh in at less than 4,000 pounds, thanks to liberal use of aluminum and high-strength steel.
The RLX will have an optional 3.5-liter direct-injected V-6 engine with variable valve timing, mated to Honda Motor Co.'s Sport Hybrid All-Wheel Drive system. The engine puts out more than 370 hp, sent to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
With 30/30 mpg fuel economy, Acura claims the RLX 3.5-liter model delivers "V-8 acceleration with four-cylinder fuel economy."
Dimensionally, the RLX Concept is about the same length as the current RL but with two inches more wheelbase and with the front overhang shaved by the same amount. Both the track and vehicle width will increase by about 2 inches.
Both models feature a double wishbone front suspension and a multilink rear suspension. Safety features include collision-warning and lane-departure systems.
Connectivity features include a touch-screen interface for e-mail, text messaging and contacts, as well as integration of HD radio, Pandora Internet radio and the Aha Radio interface via Bluetooth.
American Honda Motor Co. CEO Tetsuo Iwamura described the RLX as "new value that is right for these times. … A fast, agile and technologically advanced craft that provides clear direction for the rest of the fleet."
