Volkswagen will offer another four-door sedan with coupelike styling -- this one smaller than the CC, sources tell Autoweek, a sibling publication of Automotive News.
To be positioned below the CC, the new four-seater will form part of the Jetta lineup in about 2015. It will join successors to today’s sedan and wagon models in an expanded three-model range. All will be produced in Puebla, Mexico.
Inside VW, the new model is designated the SC, for “sport coupe.” The car was recently approved for production after U.S. market studies revealed that an earlier plan for a two-door version of the Jetta -- previewed by the NCC (New Compact Coupe) at the 2010 Detroit auto show -- got only a lukewarm response from potential customers.
“Our research suggests there is increasingly a market for a sportier and more stylish version of the Jetta in the mold of the CC, only smaller and more affordable,” a Volkswagen source told Autoweek.“From the feedback we’ve received so far, buyers want an individual body style and the practicality of four doors.”
The SC was conceived to compete against incumbent four-doors such as the Honda Civic sedan as well as the Mercedes-Benz CLC, which will be previewed in concept form at the Beijing auto show next month.
