MEXICO CITY -- Hella Lighting says it will build a 215,000-square-foot factory in Irapuato, Mexico, to produce headlamps and rear lights.
The $97 million plant will produce 1.2 million headlamps and 1.5 million rear lamps per year. The facility will open in June 2013.
In March, Hella also will open an r&d center in Guadalajara, and it will complete a 15,000 square-foot expansion of a factory in that city in June.
The company says its plants in Guadalajara and Irapuato will be its primary manufacturing facilities in the Americas.
The expansion will boost Hella's annual production capacity in North and South America to 4.9 million headlamps, up from 3.7 million. The company will produce up to 4 million rear lights annually, up from 2.5 million units.
