BMW joins coupe-style sedan race

BMW will enter the fast-growing swoopy sedan segment that its luxury competitors have created by adding a four-door model to its 6-series family.
The Gran Coupe, based on the redesigned 6-series two-door coupe and convertible, will debut next month at the Geneva auto show.
The four-door will go on sale in the United States in June. It has coupe styling similar to the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera and Audi A7.
BMW hasn't released pricing but said it will be about $80,000.
Initially, the Gran Coupe will be offered as the 640i, with a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder twin-turbo engine that generates 315 hp. It will be followed in the fall by the 650i, with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that generates 445 hp. No launch date has been given for the all-wheel-drive 650i xDrive.
The Gran Coupe is 197 inches long -- 4.4 inches longer than the two-door 6-series models. BMW said the Gran Coupe is also 4 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider and 2.8 inches lower than the 550i sedan.
