Each year there are winners and lots of losers in the auto industry. Last year we saw the demise of one automaker, two brands and 27 nameplates, according to a list that appears on the Motor Trend Web site.

Saab filed for liquidation in a Swedish court recently. Daimler pulled the plug on Maybach, its premium brand, and Ford Motor Co. dropped Mercury. And here are the nameplates -- some with a decades-long history -- that got the heave-ho in 2011:
