There is no question that Winterkorn wants to be the biggest and the best. His goal is twofold: Increase worldwide sales of the group's brands to 10 million in 2018 and become the world's biggest automaker in many metrics, but most notably profitability. Revenue is on a steep climb; so is operating profit. Winterkorn, 64, is well on the way to meeting all of his targets. Under Winterkorn's leadership, VW opened a greenfield plantin Chattanooga, Tenn., this year that is producing a Passat sedan designed for the United States.
