FRANKFURT -- Kia's design chief says a four-door GT sport sedan concept revealed here might be produced, giving the brand its first rear-wheel-drive model.

The GT concept rides on a version of the Hyundai Genesis platform. It is powered by a 395-hp, 3.3-liter turbocharged V-6 with gasoline direct injection.

"If we do a production car, you would be able to recognize it as a production version of this concept," said Peter Schreyer, Kia's global design boss. "The layout, the basic proportions, it is all very realistic."

For now, Kia has no firm plans to build the GT.

"It's a design exercise, and we have to see the reaction from the public and press," he said.

Schreyer said the GT was designed as a possible halo car for Kia, which currently has an all front-wheel-drive lineup and lacks a performance vehicle.

"It would open a new branch in the tree of our product family," he said. "It's a different type of car."
