TOSHINORI MORIYASU
|
Corporate executive vice president, automotive systems business, Toshiba Corp.
Chosen because: Moriyasu, 62, helped channel Toshiba Corp.'s electronics expertise into battery cell and power management systems for automotive use. Though still lagging behind other battery giants such as Sanyo Electric Co. or LG Chem Ltd., Toshiba has made quick inroads with deals to supply lithium ion batteries to Mitsubishi Motors Corp. for electric vehicles and to supply electric drive motors to Ford Motor Co. for hybrid cars. Toshiba says its so-called SCiB lithium batteries are safer and recharge faster than conventional lithium ion batteries, partly because they use lithium-titanium oxide negative electrodes instead of traditional carbon-based negative electrodes. Moriyasu also is trying to position Toshiba as a key supplier of smart-grid technology.
Quote: "Electrified vehicles must be tightly connected to the energy infrastructure, which differs from engine-based vehicle technology. Our approach embraces both the vehicle and energy supply sides and uses the smart community concept to further enhance the next generation of mobility."
