Chosen because: Draeger, 54, who manages BMW's r&d, has led BMW's Efficient Dynamics program, which includes the development of hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

He managed a coup against rival Opel in March when he lured Frank Weber, head of Opel's hybrid vehicle development program, to BMW. Draeger must be looking for Weber's help in making BMW's "i" alternative fuel vehicle subbrand a success. BMW will launch the first "i" vehicle, the i3 EV, in 2013.
