Lexus, often tony and quiet, is set to show some fangs

In this scribe's eyes that's the message conveyed by the polarizing styling for the grille and fascia treatment on the Lexus LF-Gh hybrid concept.

The sedan concept debuts this week at the New York auto show.

The LF-Gh is an important concept for the luxury brand. It explores Lexus' future styling direction, highlighted with an "aggressive and bold spindle-shaped front grille," the automaker says.

Insiders say the concept shows some of the styling cues planned for the redesigned GS sedan that goes on sale next year.

The Lexus LF-Gh concept debuts this week in New York.

Lexus has built its success by avoiding any risks with styling. "Conservative" and "vanilla" are words that come to mind when studying the brand's vehicle lineup over the past 20-some years.

By contrast, the LF-Gh has a menacing appearance.

Looks like a new chapter is about to unfold at Lexus.
