Too much car to handle?

TOKYO -- Is the Lexus LFA supercar too much machine to handle?

Lexus wants to make sure it’s not.

From March 8-15, the company will teach customers the finer points of controlling the 552-hp, 4.8-liter V-10 monster at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The sleek racer is famous for its annual run at the Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race in Germany and infamous for taking the life of Toyota’s top test driver, Hiromu Naruse.

Naruse, dubbed the godfather of the LFA program, died while test driving his beloved car on the winding mountainous roads around the Nurburgring circuit last June.

The LFA training program is a one-day boot camp for future LFA owners to make them, in Lexus’ words, “more confident and comfortable driving this ultra performance machine.”

Lessons encompass race theory, track lapping and performance limit sessions. The carbon fiber-bodied LFA, which can do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, cranks out a top speed of 202 mph.

Lexus delivered just four LFAs to U.S. customers in January, the first month deliveries began. It will continue shipping through 2012. Only 500 of the $375,000 sports cars are being made worldwide. Production began in December, at the rate of one vehicle a day.
