VW promises fireworks at Geneva show

Volkswagen Group will use next month's Geneva auto show to display up to seven concepts. It's a move that clearly shows the German giant believes it has the design depth, the production capability and the financial strength to rise past No. 1 Toyota Motor Corp. and No. 2 General Motors Co. to become the world's top-selling automaker by 2018.

VW Group design boss Walter de' Silva recently told Automotive News Europe that the concept onslaught in Geneva will include models for the Seat, Skoda and VW brands, “plus one -- if not two -- for Audi.”

De' Silva added that Italdesign Giugiaro, which VW Group took over last spring, also will have two concept cars for the VW brand.

Concept cars provide a glimpse of what to expect from a company in the years to come. Many concepts are never built, usually because of financial constraints.

That is not a problem at VW.

The automaker already has approved a stunning investment budget of 51.6 billion euros (almost $71 billion) from 2011 to 2015 for vehicle development and to boost production capacity at its plants.

So stay tuned: Geneva will be another crucial step in VW's quest to become No. 1.
