Spread the word: Porsche will be at the Super Bowl in spirit

Everyone wants in on the Super Bowl, and car makers that aren’t running commercials are trying everything else to get noticed.

Porsche Cars North America is the latest to announce a marketing gimmick tied to the planet’s biggest game. Porsche wants people in Dallas to shoot pictures of any of its cars seen in the city on Super Bowl day and post them to the Foursquare social media application.

The app lets users post where they have “checked-in” on Twitter and Facebook. You’ve probably seen Facebook friends announce via Foursquare that they’re at a restaurant, movie theater, etc. -- the same people who take pictures of their plates and post them on Facebook with the caption “Yum.”

What’s the prize for posting? Not much. Porsche will post the selected photos on its Facebook page.

Porsche also boasts that it will have vehicles at a hotel for test drives — but only for celebrities and VIPs.

While this is probably cheaper than paying for a TV commercial, I’m not sure Porsche’s stunts qualify as guerrilla or street marketing.
