Cheesehead tie tale packs wallop

Who would have thought one of the most discussed automotive stories of the week would turn out to be the odd tale of the Chevrolet salesman fired for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie to work? Seriously, this story was all over newspapers, TV, sports radio and Websites nationwide.

According to the numerous media reports, John Stone showed up at Webb Chevrolet of Oak Lawn, Ill, wearing the tie on Monday. That was the day after the Packers defeated the hometown Bears for a spot in the Super Bowl. Stone, who'd worked at the dealership about a month, was dismissed after refusing his general manager's orders to remove the tie.

Stone said he initially thought the order was a joke. The general manager, Jerry Roberts, said he thought the tie would antagonize customers and other employees of the dealership, which has had a marketing relationship with the Bears.

By Tuesday, Roberts said Stone could have his job back, telling a Chicago TV station that the dealership had received a lot of Internet leads from people wanting to buy cars from the dismissed salesman.

Stone said no.

He's decided instead to go to work at Chevrolet of Homewood, which reported a flurry of calls from Packers fans as far away as San Diego pledging to buy vehicles from Stone.
