A few weeks ago, on one of these walks, I passed the dealership and wondered if Bill Brown might dethrone Galpin Ford from the top U.S. sales spot in 2010.
Bill Brown came close to doing just that in 2009.
It was a neck-and-neck race right through December that year. It was so exciting our local Livonia newspaper picked up the story. Mass mailings were sent to Livonia residents asking for our support.
But Galpin, of North Hills, Calif., edged Bill Brown by 12 units. Galpin finished 2009 selling 4,370 Ford vehicles and secured its reign for the 20th year in a row.
And in 2010, Galpin held onto its title.
For 2010, Ford Motor Co. confirms that Galpin finished as the top-selling U.S. Ford dealership for the 21st straight year. Woodhouse Ford in Blair, Neb., finished second. Brown came in third.
Galpin sold 5,010 Ford vehicles in 2010, beating Woodhouse by 459 vehicles.
While I’d like to see my hometown dealership get its moment of glory, I have great respect for Galpin’s long-standing grip on first place. California is a tough market for a domestic brand, so kudos to Galpin.
But in this quickly moving world, I must say: That was last year. This is this year.
