But some of the thunder was stolen by a weekend blitz of leaked online pictures of the upcoming C-class coupe.
Indeed, there was so much blogospheric talk about the coupe that some journalists expected the coupe to turn up in Detroit as a late surprise.
Not so. The coupe will be unveiled at the Geneva show in March, said Joachim Schmidt, Mercedes' global sales boss.
He said the flashy two-door will attempt to win "a completely new set of customers -- younger customers."
"The car will be very dynamic, very expressive," he said.
The Internet photos show as much, but Mercedes was not quite ready to demonstrate it.
"The Internet pictures make us very angry," Schmidt said. "But we can't control it."
He said the refreshed C-class sedan will debut in the United States in August, but he added that the wagon is not likely to arrive here during this calendar year.
