WASHINGTON -- Volkswagen AG didn't address the relationship between its two main speakers at a Washington news conference today announcing Jonathan Browning's appointment as CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

But it became a little clearer when the television klieg lights went off that Browning and Christian Klingler, a Volkswagen AG board member for sales, go back a little ways.

After Browning and Klingler gave their presentations, reporters gathered around the two executives. One asked Browning who had offered him the job.

The tall, slender Browning reached back and put an arm around his shorter colleague.

“My good friend,” he said.
