My colleague just wrote about dealerships victimized by criminal activity, and this falls into the same category.

But here we're not talking about stolen cars. This involves dealerships serving as a depot for illegal drug trafficking.

A prime trouble spot is the parts department, where drugs can easily be hidden in frequent parts shipments.

I was recently reading the DealershipForum.com Web site, which notes that police seized 120 pounds of marijuana worth $1.6 million from a Honda/Volkswagen dealership in Maryland. An employee there was getting paid $100 per illegal delivery. All he had to do was to accept the shipment and notify a drug dealer the packages arrived and were ready for pickup.

This sort of thing also happened recently at a Mopar Parts Distribution Center in the Detroit area. An employee for the center opened up a box of wiper blades and found not only wiper blades but two 10-pound blocks of marijuana with a street value of $20,000 to $30,000 as well.

Dealers have to be so careful these days. Good help is hard to find. If you're too hasty to hire and you're not vigilant enough, you could get stuck with a real lemon.
