Is digital revolution driving decline in U.S. car culture?

Hello, department of the obvious? Someone read the writing on the wall.

Any social gathering nowadays (unless it's a car club or something of the sort) has the males talking about their computers, not their cars. The focus of enthusiasm is now on TVs and computers whereas it used to be we talked horsepower, carburetors and other automotive topics.

We all have a passion for the freedom that the automobile brings to the table but the level of enthusiasm in the automobile itself just isn't there any longer.

Part of the reason is that government regulation has mandated so much conformity of automobile design that the difference between one car and its competitor is often minute from the standpoint of the perspective of the average individual.

While it used to be that an automobile was something an enthusiast could really tinker with and still required some specialized knowledge to operate properly, today they are much closer to driving appliances and there's not as many people who are fans of their Maytag.

However, bring up Mac vs. PC in a social gathering or whip out an iPad and you'll be guaranteed an audience. Like automobiles of days gone by, today's computers are made more usable by a level of expertise so those of us with that knowledge can command the attention of all the people in the room who are affected by it.
