Where's the appetite for electric vehicles?

Ford will launch the electric version of the Transit Connect truck soon and it has an electric Focus small car coming next year as well as a plug-in hybrid coming after that. But dealers here say it's all hype and no customers are asking for electric.

"Customers would clamor for them if they were cost efficient, but they’re not," says Scott Lambert, executive vice president of the Minnesota Auto Dealers Association. "We should still be developing it and working on the infrastructure, but the market’s not there yet."

Some Ford dealers I talked to here say right now, electric vehicles are a curiosity and nothing more. As long as gasoline prices stay below $3, demand for those vehicles will not reach fever pitch.
