Credit union plan brings 229,344 sales

DETROIT -- The Invest in America program, a discount for credit union members who buy new General Motors Co. or Chrysler Group vehicles, accounted for 229,344 sales in 2009, reports the suburban Detroit marketing company CUcorp. In December, 14,000 new-vehicle sales were made under the program.

Under the discount plan, credit union members qualify for the supplier discount price for a new vehicle. To be eligible for the discount, the customer doesn't have to finance the vehicle through the credit union. But 176,611, or three out of four participants, financed their purchases through a credit union, totaling $3.5 billion in auto loans.
